World Obesity Day is observed on 4th March annually to change perspectives on obesity, correct misconceptions, end stigmas, and raise awareness of different non-communicable conditions, which are described as excess body weight in the form of fat. It can cause serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, severe arthritis, and even certain cancers. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher is considered overweight and a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. Dept. of Medical-Surgical Nursing of Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences, KIIT-DU observed World Obesity Day on 4th March 2024 in a unique way. The M.Sc. (N) 1st year (MSN Department) students of KINS initiated a Mass BMI Assessment Drive for all the students and faculties of KINS and developed pamphlets on obesity & its management to create Awareness for the community. An Interactive Talk Show was also organized for students & faculties of KINS in KIDS Auditorium from 4:00 PM-5:30 PM. The outcome of the mass BMI assessment survey was disclosed during this event. A celebrity dietician cum motivational speaker Mrs. Niharika Dash Sarangi, Founder of Diet Delight with Niharika (DHA Licensed Dietician) was invited to the talk. It was thoroughly an informational session with lots of Q& A, do’s & don’ts, where the speaker cleared a lot of myths about nutrition, diet supplements, water consumption, health, lifestyle, habits, and exercise. Students and faculty members had an excellent exchange of ideas and gained a lot of inspiration on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and the healthy aging process. She was felicitated by Prof. Asokan. R, HOD MSN Dept. & I/C R&D Cell, KINS, KIIT-DU. The program ended with a vote of thanks and students were distributed fruits at the end.
