A Brief Look

The Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics is situated on the first floor of the main college building. Conservative Dentistry is the field of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases or trauma to teeth. Treatment focuses on restoring teeth affected from dental caries, trauma and tooth wear to its proper form, function and esthetics. Endodontics is the field of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of pulpal and periapical diseases (Root canal Treatment) in order to save the tooth.

Infrastructure & Facilities

Spread at an area of 7549 sq.ft and located on the first floor of the main college building, the Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics consists of an Undergraduate section and a Postgraduate section, a spacious Reception area, separate Clinical area for each section, well equipped Postgraduate Laboratory, Professor, Reader and Lecturer rooms, Seminar room with Department Library, PG Common Room with locker facilities, Endosurgery Unit, X-Ray Room, store and a separate area for sterilization and disinfection of instruments. The department has 43 dental chair units and latest audio visual aids. The Pre-Clinical Conservative Laboratory (Phantom Lab) is situated on the second floor of the college building and has all the requisite instruments and equipments for pre-clinical study of 2nd year BDS students. There are a total of 75 phantom head units where students acquire pre-clinical skills in operative dental procedures, endodontic procedures and crown and bridge procedures. The department is also wi-fi enabled and allows free internet access.

Undergraduate Programme

The Undergraduate (BDS) program in the department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics started in the year 2007. The academic curriculum is covered in the second, third and final year through didactic lectures, pre-clinical work and clinical posting.

At the end of the BDS course the graduate is expected to –

  • Be competent to diagnose all carious lesions
  • Be competent to perform Class I and Class II cavities and their restoration with amalgam
  • Restore Class III and Class V cavities with Glass Ionomer cement
  • Diagnose and appropriately treat pulpally involved teeth (Pulp capping procedures)
  • Perform Root Canal Treatment for anterior teeth
  • Be competent to carry out small composite restorations
  • Understand the principles of aesthetic dental procedures

Postgraduate Programme

The Postgraduate (MDS) program started in the year 2014 with 3 seats. The academic curriculum includes a dissertation, Library dissertation, departmental and interdepartmental seminar presentations, journal club, Pre-clinical work and Clinical training. In addition to providing lectures and seminars, a major emphasis is placed on clinical training, such as patient care. Students are expected to be familiar with caries etiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment planning. They are required to have clinical experience in management of simple and advanced restorative/endodontic cases (amalgam and composite fillings, inlay/onlay preparations, endodontic treatment of single/multi-rooted teeth, etc.).

At the end of the MDS course the postgraduate is expected to –

  • Describe etiology, pathophysiology, periapical diagnosis and management of common restorative situation, endodontics situations that will include contemporary management of dental caries, management of trauma and pulpal pathoses including periodontal situations.
  • Perform surgical and non-surgical Endodontics including endodontic endo-osseous implants, as well as endodontic-periodontal surgical procedures as part of multidisciplinary approach to clinical condition.
  • Update himself by self-study and by attending basic and advanced courses, conferences seminars, and workshops in the specialty of Conservative Dentistry-Endodontics-Dental Materials and Restorative Dentistry.
